The Gender Lens
(Taken from Deborah Appleman’s Critical Encounters in the High School Classroom) The gender lens says that the relationship between men and women is unequal and is, traditionally, male-dominated. Application of the gender lens consists of examining the portrayal of characters, both female and male; the language of the text; the attitude of the author; gender stereotypes; the relationship between the characters; and what the author seems to be saying about society as a whole.
